Arias Saldana Familys Story

Arias/Saldana Family’s Story

This month, we are excited to spotlight Mayelin, a mother whose gratitude for Community Teamwork’s (CTI) program is so immense that words can hardly capture her appreciation.

A Family’s Story:

Mayelin moved to Lowell from the Dominican Republic at the age of 15 and has made it her home ever since. She is a proud mother of four children: her twins, Ava and Aly, her daughter Nallely (15), and her son Andry (13). When her family had their gender reveal, her son Andry was initially upset when he found out he wouldn’t be getting a new brother.

Before joining CTI, Mayelin’s two older children had been cared for in a home care setting, which, although familiar and comfortable because of their family friend, was far from home.

For the twins, Mayelin was determined to find a center-based program that could offer more structured support. She recalls the long wait for a spot for Ava and Aly, remembering how it felt like they were on the waiting list forever. She was thrilled when they finally got in and felt as though she had won the lottery. Her nephew had attended our program, and her sister was always so impressed by the care and attention her child received.

A Grateful Heart:

Mayelin can’t express enough how grateful she is for the care and attention her daughters receive at CTI. Ava and Aly have blossomed into independent, smart, and curious learners. The twins have grown so much and learned so many things, and Mayelin credits this development to the incredible teachers and staff at CTI who have truly nurtured their potential.

One teacher who stands out in Mayelin’s mind is Tiffany, one of the toddler teachers. From the moment Ava started, Mayelin knew Tiffany would be exactly what Ava needed. Mayelin is constantly amazed by how the teachers go the extra mile—asking how the girls are doing, following up when they’re sick or not acting like themselves, and always keeping her in the loop.

One thing that Mayelin will never forget is how the teachers took the initiative to begin potty training with the girls! Something Mayelin hadn’t even started at home. She recalls how the teachers recognized the girls were ready and took it upon themselves to support the process. To her, it feels like the staff loves her children as much as she does, and that level of care and dedication is something she is forever thankful for. Even the transportation team checks in when the girls are absent, showing how deeply CTI cares about the well-being of its families.

Support Beyond the Classroom:

Mayelin has been nervous about navigating the public-school system, but thanks to the unwavering support from CTI, she has felt confident every step of the way. She is incredibly grateful for the resources our program offers, from the engaging curriculum to the rich classroom materials and exciting field trips that bring her children’s learning to life. The communication is excellent, and Mayelin appreciates the photos sent home that allow her to share her children’s progress with family and friends.

Advice to Other Families:

When asked about advice for other parents, Mayelin had this to say: “There should be more programs like CTI so that every child could benefit from this experience.” She urges any parent considering our program to act without hesitation, especially if they are fortunate enough to get a spot at the James Houlares Center. “It’s incredible what CTI has done for my girls,” she says.

A Heartfelt Thank You:

Mayelin’s story is a beautiful reminder of the impact that Community Teamwork can have on families. Her words of gratitude speaks to the heart of our mission: to support, uplift, and empower families to reach their full potential. It’s families like Mayelin’s that inspire us to continue our work and ensure that all children have the opportunity to thrive.

Mayelin, thank you for trusting us with your daughters and for sharing your journey. We are honored to be a part of your family’s story, and we look forward to all the successes and milestones yet to come!
